What is DIY? You Stay Put imitates a plank of wood held up with some kind of gum. It might have been put against the wall that way, but it's an illusion. The two “gum wads” are hanging parts that keep the wood plank sitting loosely and the surface is reminiscent of IKEA plastic. This sculpture, like Can We Be Friends?, addresses “furniture politics,” gives the viewer a wide range of perceptions based on how she chooses to see the object. Is You Stay Put what we actually see, the illusion? Or is the function and success of illusion itself governed by how we look at any object either as craft or art?
